Anyone on the forum own one? they have suddenly appeared on my radar and I'm seriously considering buying one to replace my 800ST, are the later bikes with ABS better? any advice would be really welcome.

The people that I have spoken to that own one all say they love the bike. The only complaint is the sporty riding position. Personally, I think they are one of the nicest looking bikes BMW has ever made.

I agree, they have a certain coolness, a bit like a big Guzzi and I love the twin Ducati style underseat exhausts

I fitted a cat bypass pipe to my one & it sounded & performed a bit better, used to get 50mpg from it and always thought the handling was great, stable & fun.
Engine & forks can get scabby as is normal for boxers of this era, I really liked it-px'd mine for a 1050 speed triple and regretted it afterwards.

I notice the seat height is about 800mm which is pretty low, is it a big bike to ride, I'm about 5'8"

    Hello Carlos,

Its me who bought your spare seat.

I owned early one 1998, Bright Yellow, great bike, very comfortable, did 22,000 miles on it including LeMans GP once tour of France. Lovely torquey engine.

No disrepect but you would need to sit on one for height size because I noticed you have low seat on your F800ST, they are not that high but heavier 230Kg all makes difference

Make sure the clutch is in good condition or been recently replaced because it's a big expensive job, it's virtually means spliting the bike in to two parts to get to it.

How old wher eyou looking at?

have you considered the R1100RS (or the 1150)? it was the best bike I've ever had.

Listen to Guido! R1100RS is totally addictive. After 21 years, I still can't bring myself to sell mine, even though I only ride my 800ST these days. the 1100S is just as good but more sports than touring, and a beautiful thing to behold, particularly in BoxerCup livery.

I need to wait for one to pop up for sale closer to where I live with an independent dealer where I can arrange a proper test ride. The problem is I just did a 100 miles round trip this morning on the ST and I still love it, might have to keep the ST as well!

I rode a yellow '99 for a week in the Alps and loved it. I later bought an '01 and owned it for a few years. Very nice handling bike with the Telelever (I'm a huge fan) but the engine was a disappointment. Lots of vibes at 75+ mph and the stock windscreen was very noisy. I traded the bike when I bought my first '07 F800ST. The ST immediately felt livelier, quicker, and more agile, but not as planted or stable. The R11S is a stunning bike but honestly, I don't miss mine.

Tallest bike you'll sit on. There was no ABS option on this model and on R1100s bike an option to steer clear of.

I owned two of them #193 and #245. Picture here is of #245 not too long before I cut it loose in October 2018. Had about 3400 miles at the time of sale, Remus exhaust, Ilmberger hugger, etc. Been kicking myself in the ass ever since...

One of the journalists when I worked for a newspaper had an R1100S. Yellow with Termignoni (I think) pipes. Looked and sounded great. I have a photo somewhere of my Guzzi Le Mans parked beside it. Two great looking bikes.

It's a shame to have these old classic locked away, Ian. Ride the bloody things 'til their wheels fall off.
