I tried fitting my 800GT panniers to the 1200RS today. they do not fit.
they foul the luggage rack and the exhaust.
I tried swapping them over left/right and while that would clear the exhaust, it doesnt clear the luggage rack.
So thats an extra £1000 on the purchase price to go touring.

Do you ever get the impression that BMW deliberately designs their luggage and luggage mounts so that the old (and perfectly satisfactory) luggage will not fit any new motorcycle models? I bet I have had to buy 5 different hard luggage systems over the past 30 years of buying BMW motorcycles. Personally, I was always very happy with the luggage that fit on my R80 air-head, but now every new BMW motorcycle model requires completely new and ever more expensive hard luggage. So I have finally given up. While I did buy the top box for my RS (which I like to use to store and protect my helmet when camping), I am going to stick with soft luggage for saddlebags. Most of that stuff is a universal fit, relatively cheap and will not be seriously damaged if you drop your bike on its side. If stuffed with stuff, it might even reduce any damage during a tip-over, especially if you fall on the side without a muffler.

I don't think BMW is alone in model specific luggage design.

Seems I've been a bit luckier than you Roger, unless I'm kidding myself (quite possible being a silly old fart). My dealer gave me what I considered a "reasonable" trade in on the GT, then when I was negotiating I managed to get a further deal on trading in the GT luggage for a full set of RS stuff (with liners).

Just to give my dealer (Riders of Cardiff) a little plug (no pun intended) - when I was down in France I was having trouble charging my helmet communicator, there was clearly a problem with the mini usb "flying lead". Local Motorrad shop in Perigueux said they could get in a new lead for 14€ but it would take 8 days to come from Germany and then cost 40€ to fit. I popped in to Riders yesterday - they had new lead in stock for £14 and fitted it for nothing. Can't fault that for service.

Alan, maybe I should give them a call and see if they want to offer me a similar deal, lol

Buy Hepco & Becker or Givi hard luggage, and then just by the bike-model specific mounts.

I've used the same set of Hepco & Becker 30L Junior cases on five different bikes (Moto Guzzi V7, Moto Guzzi Breva 1100, 4th gen VFR750, 5th gen VFR800, and F650GS).
I've used Hepco & Becker Junior top cases (have three, 40L, 45L, and 55L) on all those bikes, and also on my F800GT, and Vespa GTS250.

I sold my f800 panniers with the bike, but kept my orange RKA liners. They look like they will fit the RS panniers.

Thankfully, my old ST panniers fit on the RS ok. The exhaust cut-out is on the wrong side, and I put some heat protection on the bottom of the right-hand pannier as it sits very close to the exhaust, and it took a little bit of wiggling them about and adding some extra padding to the pannier rails. But once that was all done, they were rock solid for a 2,000 mile tour of Scotland a few months ago, and I like them better than the massive stock RS ones.
Formerly on a Lahar Grey F800S, then after 47,000 happy miles it was traded in for a new Midnight Black F800ST, which was more or less converted back to an S. And now I'm on a brand new R1200RS, which is rather awesome! I'll still stick around if you'll have me, though, as my wife is now on the F800...

I have something like Jay recommended. The previous owner fitted SW Motech Trax 37 liter boxes on the GT. They look good and can be swapped to any future bike.
