I am interested in reliability, parts availability, are controls similar to F800GT. I would consider myself as a novice for off road So is it a reasonable bike compared to say a 250 etc

If your a novice off road I would suggest you start with a small 125 or something like a Yamaha Serrow XT225.

The G450X can be a handful. When tuned to be a handful. But it also can be a very docile trail bike too, in the right hands. It has a power up plug that when removed if it is installed. It drops the horsepower output by about 8 or 10 HP. This can be hooked up to a switch on the handlebars. This is for riding on wet grass and slick muddy surfaces. Stock it has a charcoal canister and is smog legal. A catalytic convertor comes stock on the inlet side of the stock rear muffler.

These bikes came with a replacement power up kit, off road slip on muffler ,block off kit for the smog canister and a power up plug for the wire harness. Once the off road pipe is installed the outlet is in a position on the off road pipe that it will melt the rear turn signal. Unless covered with heat resistant foil tape. As they assume a true off road set up won't be needing turn signals. This also somewhat voids the warranty. Which has long since timed out anyway. Even the switch housings are made to have the signal part of the housing split away and be removed. leaving the headlight switch above and starter and kill switch on the other side.

This power up plug is nothing more than a looped wire plugged in that makes it run a different Fuel map. At this point the 02 sensor is no longer needed and can be removed, literally. Its a narrow band 02 sensor anyway when stock. The power up plug is on the right side of the frames wire harness under the side panel inside of your thigh tie wrapped probably to the frame. You can look it up in the G450 Section.

Parts aren't that hard to get. The 2011 to 2013 Husky models used this same engine. In there TE/TXC/TC 449/511 models. CCM in England is still sourcing these engines and is building brand new bikes with the same engine too. in a few different models of enduro and dual sport off road bikes that are very well equipped. Engines new are still being sold crated for the G450X that come with the headpipe, radiator, FI unit and harness and people are buying them up. Some BMW dealers are selling them very reasonably priced to clear the shelves. Totally plug and play.

I don't know about rider position on a F800 GT but the G450 has a pretty high seat height and long travel suspension.

Can you learn to ride on one. I would say yes. That would of course depend on the deal you get, if it's a good deal and you want it buy it. It can be tuned down the road to go as fast as you will need. But parts are beginning to become scarce such as certain availability of things like plastics. They are still out there you just need to know where to look.

First stop with this idea in mind for you, would be to move this over to the G450X section. We have a world wide audience of owners and members that can help you there too. So I guess we could all help you make up your mind. There's plenty of info on the bike there and an aftermarket modifications section too. Plus the G450X specific Classifieds section.
