Just received advance notice that next year's Safari will be in Western Australia! Other news is that the TS(Tourensport) and GS Safaris will be combined (just like the Good Ol' Days) so we could have around 300 participants all up -Wow! Entries will open in June, thus I am presuming the event will be around September/October so we have plenty of time to plan the commute to and from the start, maybe 6000km for us South East Coasters and perhaps 8000km for NorthEasters, like Donny. The event itself is usually around 2000km - the tire truck is going to do good business!
A great way to extend your riding season, you poor deprived Northern Hemi snow bunnies. More info as it comes to hand,
    Cheers, Ian A.

Registration and bookings have opened! I'm in, but I doubt I will be doing the hero route thing to get there, Melbourne to Perth is 3400 Km. of mostly straight road. Trucking the bike and a cheap air ticket will be easier on my ageing ass...
Start date is October 8th from Perth and finishing five days later in Albany. Try Google Earth for the views of the fabulous country and coast in the SW corner of our wiiiide country. Can't wait!

Only a few weeks to go! Racing to get the ST serviced and gear packed by next week, it gets shipped on the 18th. Even bought a new battery today - the old one is still turning the bike over but as it is 5 years old or more, not taking any chances. It will also get a nice drink of Penrite MC 10-50 full synthetic this weekend, a GPS map update and a few GoPro mounts scattered around the bodywork, pump up the PR4's and away we go!
The organisers tell me there is still time for late entries for both the TS and GS Safari events. Check out www.bmwsafari.com or PM me if you need any intel.
    Cheers, Ian A

We made it! Epic Safari, made special by going back to the old format of combining the GS (offroad) event with the TS (touring) group. Thanks to Paul and Linda Middleton for their immense generosity in supplying accommodation in Perth and Paul's rather special F800 S for Donnie ( DiscFlight) to ride. Very special people. Hoping Donnie and Paul will put together a ride report in due course, their digital skills way exceed mine. Anyway, we will get something on this site soon.
    Cheers, Ian A

I'm sure this was a lot of fun amongst many like-minded MC enthusiasts.

I'm curious about the choice of Penrite MC 10-50. Why did you go with 10w 50? (I understand the great risk of hijacking this thread with oil talk. Feel free to ignore or maybe PM me.)

Hi Andrew! ( I just checked and in fact it was Penrite 20-50.) Reasons? Well, Penrite is a local brand with a very good reputation for quality and trustworthiness in Oz motorsport circles, the MC range is a specific motorcycle full synthetic formulation, clutch and gearbox compatible, 20 because we rarely operate in temperatures less than 5 deg C, 50 because we often run in over 40 deg C ambient, recent oil thread discussions seemed to indicate that BMW are going towards heavier weight oils for the F range - and, I have had good results in using this oil in my R1100.
I found two effects on the F800 when I changed from the dealer service oil spec. The motor is quieter on startup and the gearchange is noticeably slicker. My ST has still only around 20 thou Km. on it.
We did about 2500 Km on this run, most of it at moderately naughty velocity and the bike didn't miss a beat. It was a magnificent trip, right up there with the best of the other 18 I have done in this event over the last 23 years. I am still to do the offroad (GS) event, but watch this space....

18 of 23! That's impressive. Good for you, Ian. (And thank you for indulging my query. I'm always curious when I see new ideas being applied.)

I'm in Melbourne come March. Maybe I should get some of this oil. Oh wait, those two oil numbers would have to head in the opposite direction based on our respective weather situations.

Actually it's every TS Safari, Andrew. Because the destination varies, the event is timed for the most suitable weather so some years there has been an 18 month or so gap. The first was 1994 and was a combined GS/TS event just like the most recent West Australian event. I have been lucky enough to be the only person to have done them all, despite it being a close call with health issues since 2014. BMW have kindly made a bit of fuss about it in recent years and present me with a nice award each time I turn up. All good fun and part of the spirit of the show.
I can assure you Melbourne in March is way different from Calgary! Bring your beach gear!

Yeah, mainly 'cos many of these TS Safari pics were posted by my riding buddies, Paul Middleton, Donnie Moss and Don Epps, all keen snappers. I did take a few this trip but haven't posted any yet - I will when I figure out how to...
Some of the video clips of the GS guys are pretty good - inspiring me to contemplate having a go at the next one coming up early next year. (bucket list dreams)
