It's winter, a time for planning.

Is anyone keen, especially those members on the eastern side, for a get-together? We could pick a point on the map that's suitable for us, maybe a country town with a good pub and accommodation for a meetup.

I used to be a member of AIGOR, Australian Internet Guzzi Owner's Registry and we'd have annual meetups which were great fun.

I could be talked into a trip to the Alps, say Thredbo or Jindabyne when it gets warmer. Maybe early December? I have got the WA BMW Safari in October, Tasmania in February and possibly September, two sailing regattas before the end of the year , a domestic peace initiative holiday sometime when she makes her mind up, and a couple of Blues music festivals to fit in. "Retirement"? it's an illusion....

I used to commute from Shellharbour to Sydney Institute of Technology and back four times a week for my studies. A round trip of about 220 klms per day on a ratty (not quite) BMW R65LS,, rain, hail and shine. Did that for four years. That was 30 years ago, I was younger and much fitter then.

The Australian high country, some of my favourite motorcycling roads Ian. Thredbo and Jindy can get a bit busy in summertime. West of the Alps at places like Tintaldra and Tallangatta are amongst some fabulous motorcycling roads. Tintaldra Pub is motorcycle friendly, stayed there a few times myself. Bright is also fantastic. We used to stay at Bright to and from Phillip Island every year. Love that north eastern corner of Victoria.

Early December would be good. I'm also retired and my wife has been trying to get me to do some long distance stuff. She keeps asking me if I'm going to Phillip this year. I used to go to the World Superbikes every year and loved it.

Is the blues festival still on in Thredbo? I went to the very first one in the 1990s. A mate and I rode in on a pair of rather anti social Moto Guzzi Le Mans.

I'm also toying with the idea of a run out to Mudgee, north west of Sydney, sometime in the warmer months. Mudgee is in the middle of some brilliant wineries.

I had one like that too. 217K miles before I gave it up. Rain. snow, heat and wind. Youza, lets ride.

Sounds like a promising gathering for those not too busy having a splendid retirement sailing and chasing around all over the place.
I'm off tomorrow for a similar gathering of the Dl650's in Utah. Seems our group is growing in size. Cheers

I owned the R65LS (silver model) for five years. Put a squillion kilometres on it before I sold it and bought another Guzzi Le Mans. Besides a couple of punctures, it never let me down. Not a half bad open road tourer either.

The R65LS was an impulse buy really. I walked into the local BMW/Yamaha dealer and it was sitting amongst other traded bikes. I thought a reliable bike to commute the 220 klm round trip to college, through the city and open road. It only had 28,000 klms on the clock when I bought it. It came with a full stainless exhaust system and Marzocchi 'piggy back' shocks. It served me well.

Thredbo Blues Festival Jan 19-21, Jurgen. might be a bit of overload as we have Mark (and maybe other frozen Yankees) arriving only two weeks later to blast around Tassie. Now if he could change his dates, maybe we could combine both? Hmmm...

I've got a bit on in January. Every chance I'll be going to the International Classic Racing at the Island on the 26th - 28th January.

    Long distance stuff Jurgen?

Maybe have a look at FarRiders (www.farriders.com). Regular 1000km+ gatherings called FarRides. The next one is the 8th July, meeting at Cooroy QLD (near Noosa). That's a bit over 1100km.

Otherwise for long distance stuff you could always have a crack at an Iron Butt Association ride with a minimum distance 1610km in 24 hours. (http://www.ibaaustralia.com/)

I might keep this in mind Ian. Eastern Victoria has some of the best motorcycling roads in Australia..
