1964 motorcycle trip to Yosemite

I came across these photos of a trip that I took during late June, 1964, that I and two friends took to Bishop, California, located on the east side of the Serra Nevada Mountain range, where we stayed the night at the motel shown in photo 41. The next day we rode back home via Yosemite. I was riding a red 1964 Honda Super Hawk, one friend was riding a white 1963 Honda Super Hawk and the other friend was riding a white 1963 Honda 250 Dream. After staying the night in Bishop, we rode through Yosemite and spent much of the day there checking out the park and taking photos, before returning home to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Wow! Where did you find all those antique cars and motorcycles? Oh...they were new back then.

Your pictures bring back memories. Not of those places, since I was in Washington, but just how easy it was to get out and enjoy the outdoors. I liked the picture of the Dad with his kid fishing. Halfdome was striking.

If you really want to see something strange, I could post a bunch of photos of my trip during 1967 to the San Blas Islands, off the coast of Panama, while I was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. No motorcycles, though. We traveled by DC-3 and dugout canoe. If anyone is interested just let me know.

Born to be Mild. My ride then was a'63 Yamaha 50 cc step through frame trail bike.
I have a picture of me getting air out in California City where a friend was living. He sold me the Yamaha when he got the Hodaka Ace 100.

I like it, this is truly strange all place that you told in your post full with nature. The Dugout canoe "a canoe made from a hollowed tree trunk" am i right. You know that i don't know about dugout canoe i search it and see after that i feel how much it was strange and difficult i also want to do this once in my life what's your opinion about this.....?

That is correct. A Dugout canoe is a small boat made from cutting a large tree log in half and then hollowing out the insides. The entire tour was certainly not something that I had ever experienced before and likely will never again, if for no other reason than I hear that things have changed a lot since the 1960's at the San Blas Islands. I am pretty sure that the islands and their people are not nearly as unique now as they were then.

Those trip photos show how much tougher people were back then. Tiny bikes on a long road trip with primitive gear and accessories going through snow covered passes almost 2 miles in the sky. And you all look like it is just another day! Lol

I was a lot younger and tougher back then.

Plus, it helped that there was a lot less traffic and it moved much slower than it does now. And most people were driving just listening to music on their AM radios while the kids in the back seat were crying "are we there yet?". They did not have their heads stuck in their cell phones, not paying attention to other traffic around or in front of them. Traveling on 300cc motorcycles was the way to go almost 50 years ago. Not a 1250cc GS in sight.

I remember visiting the park while going through KC-135 pilot training at Castle Air Force Base outside Merced, CA. Took a day trip to Yosemite in 1974 via the cage. Wildlife was very friendly back then with very little traffic.

Do you guys remember the original Firefall where they had a big bonfire on top of the cliffs at night (don’t think the bonfire could be seen) and then they pushed the hot coals to the edge and they fell in a “falls” of glowing sparks?

I recall that. It would make the TV news whenever it would occur once a year. It was very spectacular.
