On the Toilet Paper front: Here is the latest news why you can't find any TP in stores, even though production is up "to record levels". After reading this article from my newspaper, I am still confused.

it may be related to the virus, but the value of the pound keeps dropping every day. Today my newspaper says that the Pound is now worth $1.12 USD. A couple of weeks ago it was worth $1.30 USD.

It may have more to do with The UK bowing out of the European Union as that was beginning to happen before coronavirus. Although, yes there has to be some effect from the coronavirus as it is happening world-wide. What would one make of the Federal Reserve printing toilet paper money to bailout mostly corporate entities? If that is all it takes, print out some more fake money and we can all play.

My son went grocery shopping yesterday. He lives in Pennsylvania and said there still was no toilet paper at his store. It is inexplicable why people are still hoarding it. I am going for our weekly grocery trip this afternoon. I will report a Central NJ TP Update later today. Ugh.

UPDATE: Plenty of TP at the grocery store. Actually more than a normal time. Pretty much everything we needed was available except for green peppers. I substituted red peppers.

No paper towels or tissues though. Of course, no hand sanitizer or disinfectant wipes.

Good selections of wines and beers though. I picked up some White Claws, 12 pack of Stella and bottle of Tanqueray (no Plymouth Gin at the grocery store). My wine cellar is always well stocked to ride out a storm. Time to drink down some of the older inventory.

While at the liquor store you should have picked a bottle of Everclear 190 proof grain alcohol. No need for hand sanitizer...95% percent alcohol.

They've had to shut down the beaches here to stop the F#(*ING STUPID IDIOTS from visiting enmasse to go sunbaking and socialising whilst breaking the social distancing rules.

The death toll of the coronavirus outbreak has reached 2,000 victims in the U.S., doubling within the span of two days, The Washington Post reported, citing state health departments.

Luckily our grocery store has a liquor license and a huge selection, so no additional and unsafe trip to a liquor store needed.

Some a-holes in NJ had a Corona party yesterday with something like 50 people and a DJ. They arrested the host. What a bunch of knuckleheads.

In the SF Bay Area almost all state, county and city parks are now closed, along with most open space areas. The reason is that officials fear that as they close down one area, people rush to other areas that might be open to get out of their confinement and to exercise and see nature again. That just makes outdoor locations that were not crowded before a lot more crowded. It only took a couple of weeks until there were so few places remaining open that they could not accommodate the number of people who wanted to use them, leading to a knee-jerk reaction to shut down all public outdoor areas everywhere.

There is an county open space park a mile from my home that has several ways to access from the adjacent residential streets. It has always been quite popular for local residents to hike in, but hardly mobbed and the parking lot is almost always empty, as most people just walk in from their homes. But when officials in the county wanted all parks to be shut, no matter where they were, the rangers who maintained our park shut the vehicle gates, shut down the bathrooms and water fountains and put up sawhorse signs saying trails closed. Now that has pushed hikers on to the surrounding public street sidewalks, which are only 4' wide, resulting in people who are passing each other having to step into the traffic lane in the street to keep the required 6' distance from each other when they leave their homes to exercise.

I am not at all sure that a broad-brush approach is the way to handle the social distancing requirement.

What is perplexing is the public announcements like that the MTA Commisioner (subways, bus, train) tested positive, had no symptoms, is feeling fine and in control and working from home under quarantine. James Dolan (owner Madison Sq Garden, Knicks, Rangers and Radio City) - same thing. Meanwhile there are reports of so many people with serious symptoms being turned away and told no tests are available and they are left to deal with it at home or, if they cannot breathe, go to a hospital. WTF...

Couple other observations and thoughts from the grocery store visit on Saturday. The grocery store was much busier than our last visit the previous Sunday. Not sure whether that was because we visited at 9am the previous Sunday versus 1 or 2pm on Saturday or whether because word was leaking that the President was going to issue a quarantine for the Tri-State area. Regardless, the measures announced later in the day are no more stringent than those announced by the governors of NJ, NY, CT and PA earlier in the week.

Other observation is how differently people are reacting. Some in the grocery had masks appearing like those used in Tel Aviv bomb shelters along with gloves. Others were there with full families and no gloves, mask etc. I would not bring my kids out and mix closely with the masses.

As for us, we are trying to limit ourselves to one grocery visit a week and otherwise staying home. My wife and I have both worked from home for years so not a major lifestyle change in that regard. What is heartbreaking is the numbers of people losing jobs. We also have four deaths already in the next town over and one in our town. The cases double every couple days. Of course, increased testing will result in that but the reality is the virus spreads easily and quickly.

Scary times...NYC is much much worse.

Visited the grocery store at 7:00 am Sunday morning. 7 to 8 is their old fogey hour and this senior citizen had the store to himself. Got everything on my list including toilet paper. At the checkout they had a plexiglass barrier between cashier and customer. When I got there at 7 they were steam cleaning the shopping carts. Everybody in the store (maybe 25 customers and 20 employees) practiced social distancing. I consider this one advantage to living in the boondocks.

It is appearing that the corona virus keeping Humans in isolation is having a positive effect on the Earth. The air world-wide is measurably cleaner. In Italy the canals have cleared due to not having gondolas stirring up the muck.

The Earth is taking a breather.

It is now unarguable the effect Man plays in the Climate change.

I got hammered on the RS forum by a couple of UK BMW motorcycle owners for putting my life and the lives of others in danger by riding 30 miles to visit Alice's Restaurant for a takeout breakfast and eating it there with two friends in their parking lot. (It was a good thing that I didn't mention that one of my friends traveled 90 miles to get there.) Anyway, it got me to thinking about the current situation in California - or at least what appears to me to be the situation from listening to the 24/7 virus news.

In California we are being pulled in two directions. One group of regulators and politicians tell us to patronize grocery stores, banks, auto dealerships, repair shops, restaurants that still remain open for takeout meals, and to go to on walks and hikes to get exercise and fresh air. They do not mention a limit to the travel distance to visit these businesses or recreational areas, although as people crowd many of these areas, they do end up with their parking lots and facilities shut down - and then the crowds move to other areas that remain open and overcrowd them.

On the other hand, another group of people, like medical professionals, other politicians (like city mayors) and police chiefs, are demanding that everyone stay home and are threatening to arrest anyone that they perceive are out and about without any good reason.

It is all very confusing without any hard and fast rules, leaving most of the public to pick and choose how they want to live under the threat of catching and transmitting the virus. We are not in a type of lock-down that is anything like what is happening in many UK and South American countries. At least not yet.

So right now, I am doing what the first group recommends, taking precautions by keeping myself isolated from other people by at least the recommended 6 feet. This is really easy for me to do as I live by myself and only travel by motorcycle. But I don't plan to stop traveling anywhere by myself on my motorcycle unless the rules become more specific and the legal consequences more obvious.

After reading Bill's grocery shopping experience above, here is mine: Safeway is advertising that they are providing senior hours before 9am, but that sure wasn't evident when I went shopping there last Friday. It was still every man (or woman) for themselves and the Devil take the hindmost. They also plan to install plastic shields between the clerks and the customers at the registers some day. But I wonder how they plan to keep everyone safe at their 6 self-checkout stations, which look like a good breeding ground for viruses and bacteria?

At my grocery store there is only one entrance open from 7 to 8. An employee stands at that door and I watched him tell a young man to come back at 8. At the checkout they had tape on the floor showing people where to stand 6 feet away from the customer in front of them. An employee was also there to make sure that distance was observed.
