Hi guys, nice to meet you all! I’m reading your awsome posts for a long time, since i started looking for my 450X. Now i found an almost brand new 2009 with 6.600km. I live in Brazil/South America and we have some of this bikes riding only offroad here. Mine is registered because i want to use at roads but with a Rally kit on it. I just found a pair of 12L carbon tanks that should be installed at place of rear number plates. As well a brand new Titaniun Akrapo. I’m a mechanical engineer and ride offroad for more than 40 years.
I have a friend of mine that works for BMW in Brazil and get all i need.

    Pippo 👊✊✊

    Welcome Pippo,
It appears in your avatar picture that your upper fork legs are actually gold anodized in color and if that's the original set of forks. The bike is likely a 2010 model or someone fitted the 2010 forks. Those gold colored forks had some internal upgrades and have a different set of lower fork leg axle lugs with a different offset for the axle on the lower fork tubes. They did these upgrades to make them a better front fork for the second year of production.

Lets see some better pictures of the bike and let us all see those carbon tanks. That sounds interesting and we would love to see those.

Don't know how you are trying to do that, so I'll go over it here.
When making a post, click the box below right that says "Go advanced" then scroll down the page to "Attachments".
Click the box to the right of that that says "manage Attachments" the small window that pops up will say "add files" in the upper right side of that small window, click that box.
It will then open to "choose files" which will allow you to browse through your computers photo/file folders once a photo has been selected click the box to the right that says "Upload files".
Do this for each photo you want to upload go down to the right and click on "submit reply" and it should attach them along with the post.

I've added 5 screen prints here for you to see the page I'm describing, however a few may appear the same but may just show the box highlighted red so it may appear to look just like the previous screenshot because it does not show my curser arrow pointing at the described selection box.
    They are numbered 125 -129.
I hope this helps you out.

It could be the size, Yes.

Several people are having the same issues on the "forum help and support page".

Just checking that the pics show, it might be that you try to download too big files.

So you said you gold anodized your old fork legs? I had a set of the gold anodized ones but sold those (in picture), how much did it cost to get them treated? It would be nice to see some pics.

What kind is your extra tank, I have the safari tank (can be seen in the picture) but do not use it much except on longer trips because it restricts the usage of the back part of the seat. It is not nice to get hit by the tank when you move your weight back and get surprised by the hard tank

    Hi Juha,

Probably is the file size, i will try to convert and reload then. About my forks i anodized then for about 60US, converted from local currency. My extra tanks are carbon fiber with 12L each and should be assembled in place of rear number plates, as result it’s similar to have two mufflers, so not too intrusive.

This is the first time I’ve seen a fuel tank like this. It’s a hell of a work in fiberglass and carbonfiber. It seems to me that the aluminium subframe is still in place. Is this unbalancing the bike ?
Contact the tank manufacturer because sooner or later the hydrous alcohol used in gazoline in Brazil will dissolve the resin glue between the glass fibers and the tank will leak.

Most automobiles in Brazil run either on hydrous alcohol (E100) or on gasohol (E25 blend), as the mixture of 25% anhydrous ethanol with gasoline is mandatory in the entire country.

I've never seen a left side tank like that either. That is a work of art right there. I like that, very cool.

Looks to be some type of frame work support incorporated towards the front attaching it to the frame.

I wonder if its all Carbon fiber structure or some embedded metallic substrate encased in that area.

I also see there is a small mounting bracket up under the front left at the bottom of the subframe.

I also see the upper mount that appears to thread into the upper rail of the subframe.

Is there other rear mounts perhaps up under the fender not seen in these pictures ?

I would like to know how the forward lower mount is attached, and to what exactly it attaches to ( subframe, subframe mount lug or attaches some other way to bikes frame ? )
Is that mount stressed or is it (load bearing) or in compression ?

Oh and Pascal is correct, Alcohol (ethanol) in the fuel will eventually turn it to soft jelly, it won't happen overnight but it will eventually happen unless the tanks are treated with a Liner/Sealer.
I would suggest using a gas tank sealer like the Kreem or Por 15 before ever pouring ethanol fuel in those tanks.

Looks amazing, did you reinforce the frame somehow, it might be needed to support the weight?

    Hi Bello, Tims and Allroad,

I know the ethanol problem that we suffer with those material, and will treat with a sealant for sure. Thanks for tips Timms! About the assembling it is attached to upper subframe at same screw of rear fender, the second screw is at lower part of subframe, here i need to insert a nut rivet almost at the end of subframe, another one at original nut at upper of s/frame and the last one uses the same fixation at the frame used from original number plate. I did not finished instalation yet so i dont know if will need reinforcement. Lets see! I already have the other side tank that i dont want to install yet, maybe in the future.
The next chalkenge is connection between both tanks, i have some idea and let all know when done.

  20. Thanks Tims1572, bello650, Allroad thanked for this post

I don't get what you mean by "using the Icon for image on upper right side of reply window" ??? Do you mean all the options boxes for changing fonts, bold, margins, attachments, insert image, insert video, link and unlink etc. etc. above that I am looking at now ? I have never used a single one of those selections and I have made over 1500 posts on here.

I've tried the below instructions and the picture comes up. I've asked the other forum Moderators and the Admin. using the Forum Help and support page and the same picture attachments come up so far for them as far as I know.

    1) click the "Go Advanced", In lower right hand corner.
    2) scroll down to "Attachments" just to the right, click "Manage Attachments".
    3) upper right, click "+ Add Files".
    4) click "Browse". Select each picture 1 at a time from your picture files.
    5) click "upload". You will see each pictures file name or number and type of file and size In my case here jpg (94.8 KB) come up below "Manage Attachments" as I am seeing myself now doing this right now.
    6) do the same thing 4) and 5) for each picture
    7) click "Done" in lower right side. The manage attachments window will clear from the screen.
    8) click on lower right corner "Submit Reply".

I just clicked "edit post" to add another picture after the fact and I click "Go Advanced" and follow the same instructions to add the second picture of my own (avatar) bike picture which I just right clicked on and saved. Here goes.
So I followed the instructions above, added the bike Avatar and clicked "Save Changes". There's a second picture.
That's the only way I ever post pictures on here. I'll edit post again to add a 3rd picture of a trail on a hill. Here it is.

I believe your problem is likely your web browser.
Try a different web browser other than the one you are currently using.

That left side tank appears to be really well made. Someone spent a lot of time to get that design right to get it to fit so well when it went to production. Beautiful work and the bike looks like it has hardly ever been used. Very clean.

Do you have another fuel pump, how does the fuel go from one tank to another with a pipe at the top of the original fuel tank ?

That is how it goes from the safari tank also with the breather hose, even though the fuel support from the safari is from the bottom of the tank, cannot see where the hose starts from your extra tank. No extra fuel pump needed, it will feed the original tank when the extra tank has the breather hose to give the feed support. But why didn't you just connect the hose to the original breather tank connection?

I read the instructions for mounting the Safari tank front and rear. They said that the original BMW tank must absolutely be fully filled and that then if the BMW cap is open and the tank is not fully re-filled that the Safari tanks will not feed the BMW tank. It works with a vacuum system in the BMW tank then?

I had noticed that the original vent had the hose crimped off with a Zip tie wrap and was wondering myself why it had to be closed off to not function. So does it fill the factory tank by it creating a siphon. Without some type of fuel transfer pump, I don't get it, what could possibly make the fuel transfer by itself when the tanks are nearly level with one another side by side? I don't understand?

The safari extra tank is connected to the vent and the fuel is just transferred by vacuum from the extra tank that has the balancing ventilation, that is how the safari works and no additional pump is needed. The extra tank is emptied first during the ride.

    Hi Bello,

I already used a treatment specifically for our gasoline! Let’s see how long lasts.

I conected from botton of new tank to regular tank using a siphon method. The pipe you see is near of pump, so both tanks are always at same level and this is because i locked the Original breather hose.

As explained the tube goes inside original tank as a fisher and fuel is sucked by underpressure from side tank

This pipe is a sifon inside original tank, it goes near fuel pump

Tims, the bike has 6.500km and i’m refurbishing each part i can. Buying parts directly from BMW Brazil. I already have the other side tank but to install it i need to cut my brand new Akrapo! I dont need all that volume of fuel (+12L)

Ok, so then it does pull a siphon of the fuel in the side tank, from loss of the fuel used in the main tank which creates the vacuum, as the main tanks fuel level is displaced it pulls an equal amount from the side tank. That is as long as the fuel filler cap seals well on the main tank.

Allroad, not yet, as the tank is attached to the main frame i believe that will not need.

Check this post here #41 my pdf file https://g450riders.org/forum/showthr...rket-Goodies!? Highlight=subframe and the solution #38 and #45.
The 4 inserts are a weak point at the end of the sub frame, mine have already broke on both sides

Thanks for the offer, but since I have the 30L tank that replaces the subframe I already have one spare set.
