A couple of days ago, the NewsSpot picked up this teaser about a new water-cooled R1200GS. It looks almost ready for production. If you download the photo and blow it up on your screen, you can see a lot more detail, including the induction plenum standing vertically above the cylinder and the exhaust pipe dropping straight down and then making a tight bend to the rear. Personally, that pipe looks a little vulnerable to me. I would sure hate to hit a big rock with the pipe. That could do some serious damage to the cylinder exhaust header. If I was BMW, I would put a steel guard of some sort in front of the exhaust pipe.

I guess it was only a matter of time before the air/oil cooled boxers were converted to liquid. That will make them a lot happier when running off road and when idling in heavy traffic.

When I bought my K100RT about 25 years ago the K was going to replace the R as it looked like the R would not make the new EU noise and emission standards, along with most air cooled engines (why the Japs also changed).

Looks like that time has eventually arrived a bit later than we expected.

What's the difference between a Harley Road King and a GS1250 BMW?

Half a cow's worth of leather and an ADV sticker.

Bike Mag shows this in the MAR 2012 issue and notes that the exhaust has moved from the front of the engine as it does not need to be cooled by the wind and also the rear drive has changed sides

Here is a short video showing the liquid cooled boxer engine parts and how they go together. Lots of parts and most of them move!
