New G650GS model

BMW has just announced a new version of the G650GS, called the Sertao, which looks a lot like the old Dakar. Not a bad looking bike. See it here:

Had a chance to see it and sit on it at the Progressive Motorcycle Show in NYC. It's a pretty nice bike...looks like good quality bits. Has ABS and heated grips. A bit pricey but then again what does one expect from BMW, and it does have more features, refinement and power than a KLR or DR.

I like the new GS sertao, it seems the evolution of the old "dakar" single cylinder, but I'm not sure of the reliability of the engine made by loncin.

In the March 2012 issue of Motorcycle Consumer News, starting on page 16, is a full test of the BMW G650GS Sertao. The magazine was very complementary to the bike. They say it has great power and fuel economy (42.15 hp/35.59 lb-ft and 49.6 to 71.6 mpg), good wind protection and good balance and spring rates for both on- and off- road riding. However, they didn't care for the shape of the seat, the front forks lack good road feel and the sidestand makes the bike lean over too much.

Measured top speed was 103.7 mph, the quarter mile took 14.10 seconds @ 89.04 mph, 0-60 took 5.58 seconds and braking from 60 mph took 117.0 feet without the ABS on and 134.9 feet with the ABS activated. When the speedometer read 65 mph, the bike was actually doing 62.7 mph. At 65 mph, the motor is turning 4820 rpm.

With a full tank of gas (3.7 gallons) the Sertao weighs 435.5 pounds. Carrying capacity is 402.5 pounds and its seat height was measured as 33.75 inches. The estimated labor time to perform a major service (with valve adjustment), is 3.65 hours and parts cost $124.21. Total for the service is $416.21, at a labor rate of $80 per hour.

They also complained about the transmission sticking in gear when the bike was new. After several hundred miles the transmission broke-in and the shifting smoothed out.

In the beginning of the article, MCN detailed the history of the F650 series. Originally, the motor was made by Rotax in Austria and the chassis and final assembly were accomplished by Aprilia in Noale, Italy. In 2000 the assembly of the F650GS was moved to Berlin. Then in 2007, the manufacturing of the motor was outsourced to Kymco in Taiwan to save money and the motorcycle assembly was moved back to Aprilia in Italy. The model was discontinued in 2008 and then reintroduced a year later, due to demand from U.S. and South American dealers, and the building of the motor was moved to Loncin in China. (The location of the final assembly of the current models was not mentioned, but I think it may be back in Germany.

I had another look at the Sertao at the local dealer. Have not ridden one but seems decent for its purpose. If only I had...

1) Some decent off-road areas around here.
2) More $$$
3) Another Battery Tender
4) A garage like Pegasus Jockey.....

First ride of my new bike, rubbish edit - camera was an afterthought, just wanted to ride my new bike, and it was raining and I didn't have my bad weather camera kit, so the shots are worse than usual.

So, I went from a 150bhp 4 cylinder all rounder, to an under 50bhp single cylinder off roader. Why?
Because I wanted to, that's why.

Sounds nice and smooth, no crunching of gears, to answer a question from above, "does it have a clutch", watch the vid, I can tell you YES it does, it is not an auto changer. Your vids young Mark are up to your usual standard, you should be well proud.

Tell you what my friend, when I next go on a ride out with the guy's from here you should come along and take your vids, Scorch, Skid, PatH, and co will love that. Introduce yourself in the intro part, direct them too here and invite them to see your vid, tell them yuo know me (Flook), they may take the ride out of that, but, I know your humour and that.

I had the pleasure of going for a ride with my son yesterday. This is a first by the way and he was riding his BMW 450X. It was a beautiful day so we headed up toward Mt St Helens. Everything was great except I had to wait a spell while my son rode up a back trail he was in the mood to explore. After a while I started thinking maybe I wouldn't mind heading up some of the many dirt roads and trails we have around here and maybe I was missing something....

This is the bike that I'm thinking might fit the bill!

Dare I say it...A cheap used Wee Strom. I did some dirt road last weekend. Totally weird after so many years on the pavement. I even took the liberty of throttling through some of the corners.
Battle Wings are much better pavement tires than dirt!

Nota, I take the SV (sister bike) on the occasional gravel road/farm road. The Michelin PR3s make it even more interesting! Though once one gets the throttle control - you can do a few controlled slides.

Back on topic - I still like the Sertao a lot. Unfortunately our legislature appears on a new initiative to ban all motorized off-road activity in NJ. Ridiculous that there is is nowhere for kids or off-road loving adults to ride in this state. In spite of the higher registrations instituted a few years back to fund off-road areas. Ugh! Wait...back on topic again..

Tales from the crypt. I actually looked at the forum and saw this old post. I got the dumbed down version with the cast wheels. It's OK. zooms along well for a 650 single and it is light compared to the other things we have. 430 pounds with a full tank of gas.
Certainly hope nothing goes wrong with the lack of good info here! That's OK though, Richard is on the Chain Gang forum too.

I have been a Chain Gang inmate since 1999, when I owned a Funduro, and keep visiting the site out of habit. Besides, I still ride a F650GS - although the fact that it has two cylinders seems to irritate some of the Chain Gang members. Those guys just can't take a joke.

THX1138 (Mark), has since been green laning, the Serato has been gone around two years back, he has an off road Yamaha now, and does near all his rides down green lanes.

I have not seen THX for around a year now, but he does post on occasions, on the Oakley Motorcycle Club FB page with videos etc.
