Just got this bike a few months ago and have experienced a few rather unusual problems.
OK the bike had 48000mls on the clock however looks and also rides very well too, but my confidence has been shattered today.

After being assured by the previous owner that the bike had been serviced by BMW and had recently had a new drive belt front and rear sprockets and covers etc, the deal was done. Service record supports this.

Well after a few miles today the front flywheel/belt drive sprocket decided to part company from the bike and went into orbit after taking a piece of leather from my right boot and shave my leg too, lucky for me that was all.
The cog went rolling down the road at very high speed and ended up about half a mile away going like a small heavy saw blade, thank god didn't hit anyone or anything else!
The plastic engine cover also dissolved and is now useless.

Now I have a very expensive repair to do, my local BMW trained service engineer could not believe his eyes when the bike was delivered to him.

Prior to this the rear wheel drive and nut flew off and nearly threw me off the bike too but was repaired and seemed to be OK, till now. Engine paint is flaking off underneath and everywhere unprotected.

Now my confidence in BMW motorbikes is completely shot. Think I might go for a Triumph instead.

However, your comments will be appreciated.

I would take the bike to the BMW service shop that replaced the belt. It sounds like they botched the job. Regardless, that sucks. One of the drawbacks to "buying used" is the lack of a warranty. Keep us posted.

I second what Mark said. They definitely screwed up and despite the fact that you are a different owner they should do all the repairs for free. If they refuse I would get a lawyer.

Not the first time this has been reported. Someone didn't tighten stuff down properly. God luck with getting BMW or the shop to admit responsibility.

Thanks for that guys, but they don't accept responsibility and I need the bike ASAP.
It's used every day 365 or when winter weather allows.
Just very unsure about using the bike now and never experienced this before, is it a common-ish fault on this bike?
Last bike was a Triumph America so this is very different.

If it isn't their fault then whose fault is it?
You can (at least here in the states) generally consult a lawyer for free.
We also have small claims court here and I would assume that there is an equivalent court there that allows you to sue with minimal cost.
They could easily have killed you or someone else. I believe it is a clear case of negligence.

Thanks Charles (Pegasus Jockey) I guess I will need to take this further.
Luckily I'm OK, but it could have been be a very different story if the belt had got caught or even shredded.
Very dangerous, so yes will take the next step.
    Cheers
