Pediatric intensive care doctor. I am one of a group of 14 ICU docs and 6 pulmonologists who cover four hospitals and provide pulmonary and sedation services for critically ill children. We see everything from trauma, infections, seizures, cancer and respiratory failure to patients who are postop from cardiac, neuro, abdominal, thoracic and orthopedic surgery. And we cover the burn unit. And have four outpatient clinics. And a few outreach clinics. We also provide about 3-4,000 outpatient sedations a year for MRIs, procedures on the kids with cancer (bone marrows and spinal taps) etc. Great job. Crappy job. This is why I need a bike! Something about those 24 hour shifts that just makes you need a little freedom....

Jewelry retailer - Started as an art student and apprenticed as a bench jeweler after college. After 7 yrs. and 3 employers I struck out on my own in 1980. Since 1995 I have limited hands on time at the bench as growing a business has got me 'kicked upstairs' dealing with the mundane aspects of business. The next challenge is to morph to semi and then full time retirement by 60, when I hope to get a lot more seat time and do some relaxed long distance touring. To satisfy my need to build stuff, I have a wood and metal shop in the basement of the house that my wife and I built as contractors. I enjoy building accessories for my bikes and have garnered the farkle king award in my small circle of bike comrads.

Good to read your words. I never got to jump school because they were too busy deploying me. I ETS'd about two years ago, but held down a job as a 46R- Broadcast Journalist, don't know if they had that MOS when you were in the service, just think AFN, Combat Camera or Public Affairs. I was not at AFN like most of my fellow broadcasters though. I was TOE with the 1st Armored Division my first tour, PCS'd to Bragg and six months later (to the day) went back to Iraq for my second tour with 18th ABN. Never could get together with any of the Ranger Bats, but got to meet, patrol, fly and drive with most every other discipline of soldier the Army has, and most of the other services as well.

I have been a photojournalist for about 28 years....currently director of photography at a daily newspaper (my username is a Latin composite - lux=light and amor=love). My most memorable assignments (on the freelance side of my profession) have been working on disaster-response NGO projects around the world related to earthquakes, drought, tsunamis, political strife and conflict, etc. Current newspaper projects involve online presence and more video production. My job is like being in history class every day.

Here in New York we have some of the most congested airspace in the world. I work at the Tracon which is the radar approach control facility for Ny/NJ metopolitain area. This has been so interesting, so I thought I'd jump in too. Been a banker, full-time mom, part time employee at a women's shelter, women's self-defense instructor, computer salesperson, high school civics teacher and in school suspension teacher (I like the challenging kids the best - my own kids prepared me for them!) Had to go back to work full time after a divorce. Took three years to heal and was incredibly lucky to meet the best friend I've ever had - been married six years. Ended up at the US Deparment of Energy eight years ago. Just became a Federal employee. Am in classification policy now - love the work and the people - very lucky for a Fed!

Got my black belt in tae twon do at age 40, gave that up after 5 years, but have been practicing pa kua (a sister art to tai chi) for 12 years, took up fishing and kayaking when I met my husband. Didn't think there could be anything as wonderful - but then he introduced me to motorcycling. He hadn't ridden for 20 years and decided he wanted to pick it up again. I told him to have fun - I'd never be on one. Never say never - we met some people when we were driving (the truck) on Skyline Drive and the women in the group were riding their own. They were so enthusiastic and said to try it. So I got a 250 Virago. Couldn't believe the fun. Have/had a couple of other bikes. Got the F800ST in March. And I thought the Virago was fun??? Wow!

Might be aging physically, but mentally... well, I'm aging there too... Now what was I saying?

Oh right, in my 50s I'm having more fun than I ever have.

Way to go, Nelsonburns, pretty much the same as Rose and I except it was me that had never ridden a bike until 3-4 years ago. All Rose's idea as she started riding in her teens and she's in her 50's now (she was a cradle snatcher by 6yrs when we met 8yrs ago, best millineum present ever ). We originally had seperate bikes but decided to rationalise, and the only bike that we both felt comfy riding and suited all our criteria was the ST. Had it 16 months now and we've never looked back.

Sounds like parallel lives. We too met just before the millenium. My husband is 9 yrs older - calls me his trophy wife! (I say only if the trophy is a buddha!) However, we are going in the opposite direction - had a canoe, then went to kayaks and love the indpendence of it. It allowed me to paddle upstream and explore while Donny fished. It made it easier for him to go out on his own when he had a day off or I was busy. We do the same with the bikes. I have an alternate work schedule so I get every other Friday off. I get to explore roads for us to take when we are both off. Donny says we are "separate in our togetherness." Couldn't be happier!

Was a supermarket manager for a major chain for 6yrs. Got into hospitality and stayed 14 yrs. Moved up to senior level. Was involved in creating a merger with another hospitality group. Then involved in floating the merged entity on the stock market. Went incredibly well and was bought out by another public company with a rights issue. Rode the market up to 16 times the value of the original business and sold out. Made a fortune.
Guess what -the listed company that bought us out, and whose shares I sold out of, is now in the death throes as a result of the world wide credit crunch. Has been in a trading halt for months and will probably be wound up by creditors. In the weeks before the sh*t hit the fan they were still the darling of the stock market with brokers recommending it as a buy. It's a funny old world. Bought a cabinet making business with 26 employess and rode the building boom until I could see dark clouds on the horizon. Sold it in 2 yrs for double what I bought it for based on the figures from the boom. The current owner has dropped back to 12 employees as a result of the building industry slowdown. Now semi retired as I'm too young to finish working. Anyway, I love it. Sitting on cash at the moment and looking for another oportunity. Hope my luck holds out.

I just purchased my BMW f800st on May 29th and I have over 500 miles on it. I ride to work daily , I teach in a french school in NYC EPS, physical education. I ride all the time, hat is my mode of communication other than when I grocery shop. My husband rides as well but a ninja 500 till next year then we pan on a BMW too. He is a fDNY firefighter. IN the warmer months, I am a Motorcycle safety instructor for MSF of NYS

I am a patent, trademark, copyright attorney (also called Intellectual Property Law or IP) with a lot of ME and EE background. I file, and prosecute them as needed, and litigate them as well. Every once in a while, I public-speak about the subjects.

The litigation in IP is jumping higher and paying better, so recently I have done quite a bit more of that than the filing latetly, but still file about 100 trademarks, 50-100 copyrights, and 25 patent applications a year. Clients are individuals, small to large business owners, and we do work for several medium to large IT firms, and law general practitioner firms who need IP work, too.

My dad was a criminal defense lawyer and always said our IP practice is cleaner. He was a motorcyclist too, taught me how to ride starting at 11, and my first bike to ride was his '68 BMW R50/2, Earles fork, big saddle and tank, leather saddle bags, in black with white hand-done pin-stripping. I rode it until '90 and he said to get rid of it, and get a new bike if I wanted to do street riding. I sold it to a dealer who paid well for it, and gave it a happy home. My F800S is as balanced and more flingable than that bike, but it was a go-forever putt-putt I still can hear in my head - way over there, somewhere.

Today was 107, tomorrow 109, Sunday 110, we cool back to 107 and so after that.

Late June is highest temps, school here is out a month already, now. But we get 7" of rain a year so we have 330 or so bike days a year. The other 35 are too hot.

Also we have great daily range of temps so we were 74 this AM and 107 at 5, now 98 and balmy, breezy, w/o sun, not hot. All I can say, poppins2chickenlittle, is I'll be riding throughout your winter, and spring rains. I don't miss the snow or ice, or 77" of rain in NY.

I don't feel the heat of the bike in traffic, the rode is always hotter. Asphalt soaks up sun, and we have a lot of it.

A lot of high rises are going up on the waterfront in Green point. I live in a private own building with my husband a NY city FDNY firefighter in Bushwick actually.

I'd imagine a lot of change (actually don't need to, I was there for 10 days last summer). A few tidbits for my last years there, Son of Sam, Bronx (and some of Brooklyn) burning, black out with lots of looting, ice storm with a power line down on my car, and snow storm of 30+ inches that shut LI down for a week, and NYC down for 3 days. I was so glad to get out of town, Chicago looked good. But after two winters there, I had enough winter forever. None here.

Like so many other I have also just found this thread. So very interesting to see what other owners of the BMW pursue as careers. As for me, I was in hospitality, managing hotels etc, went to culinary school, became a Chef, then travelled a bit, found myself in the west country for a while, finally realizing that working in a hot kitchen for the rest of my life just didn't seem to fit into what I wanted to do. Saved my money then left the UK to find my fortune. I had Friends in Santa Barbara California, so ofcourse I went to stay with them in paradise for a while. Got the Green card thing, and then back to school I went whilst working in a restaurant. Became a Surgical technologist, what's that you say? presently I work in a OR assisting Surgeons with surgical procedures, have been doing that for a while now, I used to be a traveller, going to different medical facilities on 13 week assignments, everything paid for, very nice, top dollar, no political BS to deal with. Anyway I am in a static position as of this moment, possibly looking to travel again. As a part of my job I'm tied to the Pager and the Mobile, being on-call I have to be within a 30 min radius of the hospital.

For me the F800St is my therapy,being gowned gloved, masked, standing for hours on end in a sterile environment can be a challenge at times but in Northern Ca we have some of the most amazing roads, I live on the coast, I'm spoilt I know.

Well, I joined the ARMY (US) at age 19 and became a M1A1/A2 armor crewmember. After I got out of the ARMY, I became a valve tech for Crane Nuclear and worked at various nuclear facilities for two years. I then had an epiphany and realized I didn't want to be a "knuckle dragger" for the rest of my life. So I went to a four year institution of higher learning and earned a B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering. I a currently working as both a nuclear and mechanical engineer building the first commercial nuclear facility in the US in thirty years. Not as exciting as some of the other post in this thread, but its a living.
